Sea kayaking, whale watching, surfing, sailing—Pacific Mexico is a seaside playground

Sailing

Famous Jack Nicklause Signature 3b Hole
There are few better ways to experience the grandeur of the ocean and the shoreline than from the deck of a luxury sailboat. Day trips invite you to view humpback whales, dolphins, sea turtles and rays, while sunset cruises showcase the fiery sky and the twinkling lights of Puerto Vallarta. Sailing lessons and clinics are available through the Marina Riviera Nayarit, or can be arranged through the Riviera Partners Realty Punta Mita Concierge.

Whale Watching

Famous Jack Nicklause Signature 3b Hole
From December to April, Humpback whales frequent the Bay of Banderas, allowing us to see them breach the water and splash down as they perform their magical “sea ballet.” Another treat is being able to hear them sing their mystical songs. Whale watching in the waters surrounding the Marietas Islands provides the perfect venue for learning more about the Bays’ diverse ecosystem.

Fishing

Famous Jack Nicklause Signature 3b Hole
The waters off Punta Mita are favored by sport fishing enthusiasts who try their luck at catching Blue, Striped and Black Marlin, Dorado, Amberjack, Sailfish, Wahoo and many others. Whether in Banderas Bay or the Pacific Ocean, the action awaits from the deck of a luxurious sportfishing boat! Not only does the Bay average over 1,000 feet deep, but the water temperature, being on the same latitude as Hawaii, is ideal year round for these fish. Trophy fish are found in the waters offshore and outside of the Bay, with noted spots being El Morro, Corbetena and El Banco, all approximately 15-20 miles from Punta Mita.

Riviera North Shore & Punta Mita Surf & Paddle Club

Famous Jack Nicklause Signature 3b Hole
Meeting every Friday, 4:30 pm at Plaza Ollin (Boca Deli) is the Riviera North Shore & Punta Mita Surf & Paddle Club. The group then heads over to the Punta Mita Residents’ Beach Club to meet a panga that departs at 5:00pm (weather and waves permitting), and head out to the best break for that day. There is no cost for the panga/surf adventure except to cooperate with a tip for our boat captain. Should the waves be too large at the Punta Mita Beach Club we meet the panga in the village to facilitate our departure and arrival at the El Coral restaurant. Come join in, no matter if you are a beginner (we do not currently have an instructor), intermediate, or advanced surfer or paddle boarder/surfer. Our idea is to share in another spectacular sunset surf session and meet more people in our community that share the same passion for catching a few waves! Surfing

Famous Jack Nicklause Signature 3b Hole
The Riviera Nayarit region is a known haven for year-round, warm-water surf.

Punta Mita itself has four slowing peeling breaks off its shores with another two in close proximity. These breaks are best for longboarding, but frequent swells will kick up the action a few notches for short-boarders as well. Because the beaches in Punta Mita are more challenging to access (due to the gated community on its shores) these breaks tend to be less crowded.

Punta Mita breaks:
El Faro - located on the southernmost bay of the Punta Mita point.
The Cove - located on the southernmost bay of the Punta Mita point.
El Anclote - right-facing longboard break, slow and long. In front of the El Coral restaurant and El Faro condos; accessible from the rocky beach.
La Lancha – mostly rights, some lefts; longboard break located 1.5 miles east/south of El Anclote, in front of Ranchos; best to access by a panga boat from El Anclote.

Costa Banderas breaks:
Punta Burros – considered a favorite in the area, offers both right and left breaks, for both long and short boards; located at the Palladium Vallarta resort, 10 minutes south of El Anclote. Accessible via a path to the left of the resort.
Los Veneros – classic reef break with a long right; good wave for short boards, but longer boards also work here. Considered to be similar to the wave at Malibu Point. Nearby Los Veneros are two other breaks, Swimming Pools, a fast hollow right, and the Beach Break, a wide, left barrel break over a sandy bottom.

Nearby Sayulita is the most popular surf spot in the area, with its popular right beach break right in the center of town. It’s ideal for beginners or longboard riders. Doubling the fun is a fast left break for more shortboarders. It’s the most consistent break in the area, and generally the most crowded. Among the locals surfing here are likely to be some of Mexico’s reigning surf pros.

When to surf:
Winter season (Nov-March) is favored, with air temps at 75-82F, and water temps from 75-78F. Within the Bay and around Punta Mita conditions are best, with W and NW swells bringing consistent line ups of slow peeling waves or hollow and barreling waves. Surf ranges from 2ft to 10ft, depending on swell conditions.

Nayarit’s waves are smaller in summer season (April-October), but periodic storms will bring up Southern Hemisphere swells. These long swells come in from s to SW and generally last 3-4 days, with average sizes of 3-5 ft. although larger days are possible.
